At the initiative of councilor Stefaan Verheugt, the city council unanimously supported an accessibility motion in June 2019. The accessibility of the Binnenschelde beach for wheelchair users was the first reason (see also Motion for accessibility). Now a plateau has been realized in the corner of the beach on the south side. Accessible Bergen op Zoom hopes that wheelchair users and their family and friends will make good use of this plateau. The catering facilities can be reached by letting the wheels make quite a few revolutions.
Sufficiently accessible?
The photo of the cutout shows that 'paddling' is becoming difficult. Much more important is the accessibility of the road that a wheelchair user must follow to get to the platform or to the catering establishments. The pedestrian promenade must have a free walking lane for this. Such a strip with a natural guideline is also a must for people with a visual impairment. For people with a pram, this walking lane without obstacles is a godsend. Unfortunately, the practice is different, as can be seen from the photos below.
